Insulating Where Deep Mining Began

Spray Foam Insulation in Carbondale works on some of the oldest homes in the region. Carbondale was the site of the first deep-vein anthracite coal mine in the United States, developed by William and Maurice Wurts, founders of the Delaware and Hudson Canal Company. Their gravity railroad from Carbondale to Honesdale began operating on October 9, 1829. The 2020 census counted 8,828 residents.

Old housing

Immigrants from Wales, England, Scotland, Ireland and Italy came to work in the mines and railroads, and the city filled in with frame houses on tight lots. Every census since 1940 has shown a decline in population, so most of the housing is old. A full plan usually includes attic sealing, wall-top blocking, cellulose to depth, dense-pack walls and sill foam.

Mine fire

The Carbondale mine fire burned from 1946 to the early 1970s. Today, the bigger concern for homes is the ground over old workings, which can settle and open gaps at the foundation. We seal those gaps at the sill.

Housing

The 2020 census counted 4,214 housing units, 11.4% vacant, on about 3.2 square miles. The median age was 41.3, and 20.8% of residents were 65 or older.

Code and zone

Pennsylvania's 2021 UCC took effect January 1, 2026. Lackawanna County is in PHRC's Central zone and OpenEI's Zone 5A.

Costs

HomeGuide lists an average attic job at $1,000 to $2,700 and dense-pack walls at $1.60 to $4.20 per square foot. Your written estimate is the price.

Rebate

If PPL serves your home, its rebate form lists insulation at 75% of cost, up to $500 or $200 depending on heating type.

A typical Carbondale job

For an older Carbondale house, a common plan is: block the wall tops, seal the attic floor and chimney gap, blow cellulose to depth, dense-pack the walls and foam the sill and rim. We check for old wiring and vermiculite first.

Renovating vacant houses

With more than one in ten housing units vacant, Carbondale has houses being bought and fixed up. Insulating during a renovation, while walls and ceilings are open, is the cheapest time. Get a free estimate
