Frequently Asked Questions

Spray Foam Insulation Questions

How much should I expect to pay for spray foam insulation?

HomeGuide's 2026 national range is $1.50 to $5.00 per square foot installed, with closed-cell at the higher end. Small jobs often have a minimum of $1,000 to $2,000 or more. We price your house after seeing it.

How much does spray foam cost for a 2,000 square foot house?

HomeGuide lists whole-house spray foam at $8,000 to $20,000, and Fixr at $10,000 to $30,000. In an older Scranton house, a mix of attic sealing with blown-in, rim foam and dense-pack walls usually costs less than foaming everything.

Why is spray foam insulation now a red flag?

Usually because of bad installs, such as foam sprayed over roof leaks, rot or old wiring, or foam that was mixed or cured badly. In old houses it can also trap moisture in walls that need to dry. We use foam where it fits and cellulose where the wall needs to breathe.

What is the downside of spray foam insulation?

It costs more than cellulose or fiberglass, it is hard to remove later, and it needs careful installation. It is not a cure for leaks. On an open attic floor or in plaster walls, other materials often work as well for less.

Does PPL give a rebate for insulation?

PPL's rebate form for June 2026 through May 2031 lists insulation rebates of 75% of cost up to $500 for electric-heat homes, or $200 for homes with central air and non-electric heat. Check the current rules before you start.

Can you insulate the walls of an old balloon-framed house?

Yes. We dense-pack cellulose through small holes, which also helps block the open cavities that let air rise through the house. We check wiring first.

Spray Foam Insulation Questions

Is spray foam safe in an old house?

Yes, where it is the right material and installed properly. We avoid it over live old wiring and in walls that need to dry.

Can foam go on a stone foundation?

Closed-cell foam can go on dry stone. We check for moisture and leave areas that need to dry.

How long do I stay out after spraying?

HomeGuide advises 24 hours or more. We confirm for your job.

Does PPL require foam on rim joists?

Its rebate form says rim joist insulation must be spray foam, rigid foam or a combination.

Attic Air Sealing & Insulation Questions

What is balloon framing?

A framing style where studs run from foundation to roof without a plate at each floor, leaving open channels for air to rise.

Will air sealing stop ice dams?

It removes the main cause, warm air reaching the roof deck.

Do I need to remove old attic insulation?

Not if it is dry and clean. Vermiculite should be tested first.

How long does it take?

One to two days for most houses.

My attic has a stairway and a door. How do you seal it?

We weatherstrip the door, insulate the stairwell walls and the door, and seal around the frame.

Basement, Sill & Rim Joist Insulation Questions

Can you foam a fieldstone basement wall?

The upper part, if dry. Lower stone walls often need to dry and are left alone.

Will foaming the rim warm my floors?

Usually noticeably, since it stops cold air at floor level.

Does PPL rebate basement wall insulation?

Its form lists basement walls if the insulation reaches R-15 continuous or R-19 cavity.

How long does it take?

Usually a day.

Can you seal old basement windows?

We seal around the frames. Broken or rotted windows need repair first.

What about the bulkhead door?

We can weatherstrip and insulate the inner door.

Older Home Wall Insulation Questions

Can you insulate plaster walls without removing them?

Yes, through small holes.

What if I have knob-and-tube wiring?

Live knob-and-tube should be replaced or confirmed safe before walls are filled.

Will dense-pack settle?

Not when packed to the right density.

How long does it take?

One to three days depending on the house.

Can wall insulation be done in stages?

Yes, each wall or room can be priced separately.

Why is my enclosed porch so cold?

Porches were often enclosed without insulation in the walls, floor or ceiling. We can check and quote each part.

Blown-In Cellulose Insulation Questions

Is cellulose safe?

It is treated for fire resistance. It must still be kept away from chimneys and non-rated fixtures.

Does cellulose settle?

Some, so we blow extra to account for it.

Is blown-in cheaper than foam?

On an open attic floor, usually much cheaper per R-value.

How long does it take?

Usually a day.

Can my plaster ceiling hold deep cellulose?

Sound ceilings can. We check for sagging or loose plaster first.

Do I need to empty my attic?

Clearing the floor helps. We can plan around a storage area.

Old Insulation Removal & Replacement Questions

What does vermiculite look like?

Pebbly, gray-brown or gold loose fill, often with a shiny look.

Do you remove asbestos?

No, that is work for a licensed abatement contractor. We insulate after.

How long does attic removal take?

Usually a day.

Is removal always needed?

No, only if the insulation is wet, soiled or unsafe.

Will removal make a mess in my house?

The hose runs from outside to the attic, and we protect the path.

Is a dusty old attic a problem?

Heavily soiled insulation is better removed before sealing. We assess it on the visit.
